By the grace of God, I consider myself fortunate to be alive. Karen Slater. Karen’s upbringing was marred by a belief instilled in her by her parents that she held no value, as they incessantly labeled her a worthless individual. She endured physical abuse and was subjected to the perils of a challenging council estate in Newcastle’s West End.

Her initial escape came through glue sniffing, which was soon replaced by a new companion found at the bottom of a vodka bottle. Upon leaving her family home and venturing into the broader world, it seemed inevitable that the father of her child would perpetuate the cycle of violence that her own father had initiated. However, he escalated the brutality, culminating in a particularly vicious attack involving fists, boots, and a hunting knife that nearly claimed her life.

Her existence devolved into a haze of alcohol as she spiraled further into chaos, ultimately leading her to a point of desperation. Rescued just in time, she found herself in intensive care, where she observed the slow rhythm of a heart monitor and pleaded with her God to allow her to succumb.

Then, an unexpected turn of events occurred; her heart rate began to stabilize, and a profound spiritual awakening surged through her. In that moment, she discovered a renewed sense of hope and optimism, as if someone was communicating with her, assuring her that she had reached her lowest point and that the only direction left was upward.

As she fluctuated between consciousness and unconsciousness, she was reminded that she possessed a reason to live, a purpose, questioning why anyone should endure the suffering she had experienced. She realized she must survive to advocate for the abused, to support victims of domestic violence, those who had faced sexual assault, as well as alcoholics and addicts.

Upon her discharge from the hospital, Karen Slater purchased exercise books and pens, embarking on the journey of writing. This narrative represents her story, her message to the world.
